One in 26 people are diagnosed with Epilepsy during their lifetime. This spectrum ranges from episodes well controlled with medication, to disabling epileptic events, which can lead to death. Like so many others, I was surprised to hear the incidence of this disease is so high.
Individuals with intractable epilepsy struggle to live independently due to the fear and anxiety of having a seizure. We don’t see them at the grocery store, as many can’t drive. We don’t meet them in the workplace as many struggle work. In essence, home becomes a safe haven for fear that a seizure may occur.
Ryan lived with epilepsy for years, cycling through multiple medication regimens in an effort to prevent episodes. He continued to work as an attorney, and remained a devout husband and father. Ryan did not let the diagnosis define him, and pushed to live and create a fulfilling life for both he and his family.
Through partnership with Tom Walter and Wake Forest Baseball, we have been able to donate over 30 thousand dollars over the last two years.
This year we will be hosting the third annual Ryan Lloyd Foundation Golf Tournament at Bermuda Run Country Club on Friday April 17th at 1:00pm. This will be followed by the Wake Forest vs NC State epilepsy awareness baseball weekend series. We would love to have you join. If you are unable to, we would love to make you part of the Ryan Lloyd Foundation team through online donation.
The Ryan Lloyd Foundation is dedicated to funding epilepsy research, raising awareness, and supporting individuals and families affected by the condition. Inspired by Ryan Lloyd’s legacy, we strive to empower communities, advance scientific breakthroughs, and create a future free from epilepsy.
